Maryland War of 1812 Bicentennial Commission FAQs

What are the Commission's goals?

The goals of the Commission will be articulated in a Plan of Action to be developed over the next year and reported to the Governor and the General Assembly by September 1, 2008. The Executive Order charges the Commission with a series of tasks that will inform goal development. The Plan will be developed from the recommendations of many Advisory Committees, through a series of regional community meetings statewide, and through citizen input submitted through the website, www.warof1812.org. The Plan is likely to include goals for education, tourism, resource stewardship, inclusion, and statewide participation.

 

When will the Commission members and Chair be named?

The Executive Order calls for a 13-member Commission. Six are ex-officio members, and seven are non-ex-officio, appointed by the Governor. It is expected that the non- ex-officio Commission members, and the Chair, will be named by mid-October.

 

Who is the Commission's Executive Director?

The Commission's Executive Director is Bill Pencek bpencek@choosemaryland.org ; 410 767-6289). Any questions concerning the work of the Commission should be directed to him by email, phone, or through www.warof1812.org.

 

What Department will staff the Commission?

The Maryland Department of Business and Economic Development, Division of Tourism, Film and the Arts, will staff the Commission and house the Executive Director. The Maryland Historical Trust, the Maryland State Archives and other state agencies shall assist when requested by the Commission.

 

What is the role of the Advisory Committees?

The Advisory Committee will do much of the research, fact-finding, and development of preliminary recommendations for the Commission. At least seven Advisory Committees are anticipated: Development and Sponsor Relations; Resource Stewardship and Visitor Experience; Education and Curriculum; Programs and Events; Transportation and Capital Infrastructure; Communications and Marketing; Operations and Management.

 

Will the Commission’s work be done after the 2014 culmination?

The Commission will expire upon termination of the Executive Order, June 30, 2015.

 

When will the Commission issue a plan for events, programs, marketing and infrastructure improvements?

The Commission’s Plan of Action is due to the Governor and General Assembly by September 1, 2008.

 

How will the Bicentennial events and activities be funded?

The events and activities which comprise the commemoration are expected to be funded through a wide range of sources and partnerships, including local, state, and federal government, for-profit and not-for profit private organizations including corporations and foundations, and individuals.
