Before Oriole legend and Aberdeen native Cal Ripken Jr. opened Ripken Stadium, Aberdeen was known more for ordnance testing at Aberdeen Proving Grounds. The U.S. Army Ordnance Museum is still there. Its collection of army artifacts dates back to the American Revolution.
The Ironbirds, a minor-league affiliate of the Orioles, play at Ripken Stadium, which also hosts the Cal Ripken World Series, an international baseball classic for 11-12 year-olds in August.
Aberdeen is about 30 miles northeast of Baltimore, just off I-95, in Harford County, the "Gateway to the Chesapeake Bay."
